Hong Kong set to lose charm as a Study Destination
The tussle between democratic minded Hong
Kong citizens and main land Chinese government has increased to new level in
last one year. The life at Hong Kong got affected with regular barb and clashes
with pro mainland Hong Kong government and freedom loving Honk Kong citizens.
Last year marked too many protests almost every week with some very violent
clashes with the police by pro democracy people against increasing
control of Hong Kong by Main land China. And finally a new bill has been
passed to curb several such freedoms granted to Hong Kong people.
It means slowly Hong Kong will replicate
Mainland China in terms of curbing people’s freedom and their social/civic
rights. Same restrictions will apply here .This is not a good news for the Hong
Kong and its people. It will lose its status of one of the busiest World
financial center and also an open cosmopolitan, multicultural, democratic
society as Special Administered Region (SAR) of China. Thousands of expatriates
who work there will be affected and so as thousands of Indians.
In last decade Hong Kong slowly becoming a favored
destination for Indian students apart from USA and UK and other preferred one of Canada, Australia, Singapore, Germany and France but it is soon going to shed this charm and
parents will hesitate now in sending their children to Hong Kong with several
reasons but mainly,
1. Long continuing battle between Pro
democracy block and Mainland supported administration.
2. There will be lot of restrictions and
this will make life tough for students going from free and open country like
India and others.
3. The western sanctions will put disadvantage
on the degree obtained from Hong Kong.
4. The quality of life will deteriorate in
years to come.
5. The ongoing border clash with Chinese
will prove a dampener for Indian parents to send their child to Hong Kong.
6 And also after their return after completing
the course from Hong Kong, they may face some discrimination in job/higher studies
in India or other countries.
7. Safety issue due to ongoing clashes
with police
8. By habit Indian students are out spoken
and put their political view etc freely, having so in Hong Kong might put them
in trouble.
9. Losing charm of financial capital will also
affect the quality of education and enrollment.
In above circumstances it would be good
for Indian parents to explore other educational destination such as Singapore,
Australia, Germany, France and Canada for their children.
Well said Sir. Hong Kong has always been a prefered destination, one reason was language barrier. You could do your master and particularly research in English with international faculty. Which is still lacking in PRC. All universities are well ranked and good scholarships are available with good employment (again no language barrier) opportunities because it is very well placed strategically.
