Purpose of Human Life
Throughout history, civilizations, communities, and individuals have sought to uncover the true purpose of human existence. Rationalists, scientists, spiritualists, and religious leaders have all contributed their perspectives, resulting in a vast array of literature on the subject. Yet, a universally humane definition of the purpose of mortal human life remains elusive. Each entity endeavors to define it in its own unique way, varying widely across regions, communities, and individuals. Amid this diversity, a unifying thread has often been missing, leaving the multitude of definitions on the purpose of life seemingly disconnected.
Recently, I came across the thoughts of Nick Cave, a multifaceted individual—a musician, songwriter, screenwriter, novelist, and actor—whose reflections seemed to serve as a connecting point, shedding light on the fundamental purpose and meaning of our existence.
Cave delineates two essential pillars that lend meaning and purpose to our brief sojourn on this planet.
Firstly, he emphasizes humility as paramount. It entails a profound understanding that our world and society aren't divided into simply good and bad people; no one is born good or bad;rather, they comprise individuals, each grappling with their own situation, circumstances, environment , vulnerabilities and flaws within the common human struggle. Recognizing our collective imperfections fosters tolerance and acceptance of others’ shortcomings, making the world feel less discordant and intimidating.
To empathize and perceive from another's perspective breeds kindness and compassion, stemming from this humility will serve the very purpose of human life.
Secondly, Cave underscores curiosity as equally vital. Viewing those who don't share our values through a lens of curiosity transforms them from being perceived as threats to becoming intriguing subjects. Through developing such understanding and awareness, a realization dawns: people across the globe are fascinating, each engaged in their unique battles for existence. Understanding that the modes of survival differ while acknowledging the shared human struggle facilitates easy initiation of conversations, enriching and sharing both parties involved.
In embracing humility and curiosity, we pave the way for a more compassionate, kind, sharing ,interconnected world, where understanding and acceptance reign supreme, transcending barriers and enriching the human experience universally.
